It has been a long and perilous journey…

I don’t quite remember exactly when the idea for Solar Blades & Cosmic Spells hit my mind. Maybe it began to form the first time I saw Star Wars when I was a kid. But it surely took a more identifiable form after years of media consumption, including comic books, pulp literature, movies and especially games!

The fact is that around 2012 I discovered the Old School Renaissance, its games and the great and diverse community around it. I fell instantly in love with it and with the endless possibilities it offered. The Appendix N literature that formed much of the backbone of inspiration for many of its games was very refreshing to me (I basically grew up believing D&D and fantasy to be simply a derivation of Tolkien’s Middle-Earth).

The way many members of the community created their own stuff, shared it around, published it online and added a little bit of their own weirdness and creativity to the melting pot of OSR gaming made me feel I could finale make the game my own, and I decided to follow their step and contribute a little bit with my own ideas.

Sharp Swords & Sinister Spells was my first foray as a creator of RPG material. I made it as an amalgamation of several games I really like and focusing on sword and sorcery adventures. It was fantasy, but a pulpier fantasy than usual.

To my surprise, the game and myself were very welcomed by the community and got some really high praises. For a game I basically designed for myself, with everything I wanted in a sword and sorcery game, I was really honored and humbled.

I met many great people because of the game and my interactions with the community. Real friends I hold dear in my heart. And I learned a lot! I am still learning, everyday.

Solar Blades & Cosmic Spells is the result of some of that learning process. When I started actually developing it, I began publishing small parts of the text over this blog and got many responses regarding mechanics, inspirations, and many other things.

Writing and play-testing the game was a real treat, and sharing it with other was amazing. Now that we are in the final hours of this leg of the journey I can look back and enjoy every adventure and obstacle!

It has been an amazing experience, and an incredible journey… But there will be many more!

I am already writing the next book for Sharp Swords & Sinister Spells and planning what to do after that. I am also planning on creating material with other publishers and authors that I admire. I can’t wait to share it all with you all!

In the end, I would like to thank all of you who has been following my adventures in this community, who have been sharing things with me, who has been encouraging me to do my things and who have taken the time to look at the stuff I created!

I love gaming, I love creating things, I love writing, I love illustrating, but I love being part of this community even more!

To make up for all my ramblings, here comes a few house rules created by Jim Miller for his SS&SS games that I am probably going to steal, tailor to my needs and insert in a future book!

How to never describe a dungeon!

Artwork by Luigi Castellani I've heard it a thousand times. You probably heard it too. Some people , I don't know why, say that dungeons , especially large ones, are boring . The endless repetitions of rooms and corridors and having to choose to go left, right, north or south depresses them. I don't know why. Actually, I do know why. Because they don't really know how to run a dungeon in play. It seems easy, effortless. Just say what's in the room the PCs are in and where the passages going out of it go. But it's not. They get bored with the "you get to a intersection and there is a door to the north and two passages, one going east and one going west" because that's a terrible way of describing a dungeon environment and gives nothing really useful to the players to choose from. You never describe a dungeon like that . There's a lot more going on that we can initially see. A good referee will take all the context of what the dungeon w...

My RPG Zine Trilogy is on Kickstarter!

I can't believe I didn't post about it here! The Dead are Coming, Screams Amongst the Stars and Running Out of Time are on Kickstarter right now! These are 3 complete games, made using the system of Electric Bastionland and Mausritter as the basis (and with some modifications to fit my vision for each of them). As with my games, they all come filled with many tools and tables to generate gaming content, adventures, locations, NPCs and much more. They are compact, easy to use, and equipped to provide you with years of entertainment! Here's a brief description of each of the games. The Dead Are Coming The first of them is called The Dead Are Coming, a minimalist, OSR style RPG about survival in a post-apocalyptic world where the dead have risen and other survivors can be much worse than the undead. Characters in this game are common people who have been struggling to survive, find their loved ones, keep them safe and just trying to keep living. They all carry resources like...

The Faithful - An Optional Archetype for Sharp Swords & Sinister Spells Revised Edition

Work on the revised edition of Sharp Swords & Sinister Spells is moving along. This will be a hefty tome, with a LOT of tools and new options to customize your campaign, keeping the style, simplicity and flexibility of the original game. Today I come to present my lateste addition to the draft, a new Archetype for those that want to insert some elements of more tradiotional fantasy into the game. The Faithful is an archetype inspired by the Cleric of more popular RPGs, but with some twist to fit SS&SS better. Following it, there is a sample "God" to use with it. The Faithful The gods have chosen you to represent them in the mortal realm, or at least that’s what you believe. Most of the priests, monks and shamans perform their rituals without any hope to get an answer from their patrons, but you know you are being listened to. Your patron, your god or your ancestors help you and those that they deem worthy through you. Your faith can actually operate miracles. ...
